Aion 2 Theostones: what they do and which one to engrave

By CorpusPublished

NCSOFT / AION 2 game art

TL;DR

  • A Theostone gives your weapon or guard a chance to trigger an effect when you attack: extra elemental damage, damage over time, or a control effect such as Stun.
  • Only weapons and guards have a Theostone slot, one each. Two identical stones do not stack.
  • For PvE, Grobs, Madsin and Kanon agree the effects are worth very little. Engrave something cheap and move on.
  • For PvP, the control effects matter. Stun, Paralyze, Root and Seal are the ones to look at.
  • Theostones are lost on a Gear Transfer, so keep the expensive ones for final weapons.

How Theostones work

Theostones are engraved from the Theostone tab of the Enhancement menu. In the data, every weapon and guard has 1 Theostone slot and armor and accessories have none. That fits FRESHY's routine of putting one on both the weapon and the guard.

Every stone has the same shape: a percentage chance on attack to trigger one effect, then a short internal cooldown.

Stone typeInternal cooldown
Damage1 second on almost every stone
Control5 seconds

The item text adds one rule: when identical Theostones are engraved, only one of their effects applies. Use two different stones on the weapon and guard.

Engraving a new stone over an old one replaces it, and the game warns before it does.

Creator tip

The Theo stones is what makes your weapons glow like this. Now, Theo stones are always structured in the same way. You always have a chance to apply a certain effect.

What the grades do

There are 17 stones at each of Rare, Epic and Unique. The higher grade of the same effect type has a longer or stronger effect. Some examples from the data:

EffectRareEpicUnique
Single-target Fire damageZikel's Vestige: 1% chance, 5,000Traufnir's Courage: 1% chance, 10,000Tiamat's Rage: 1% chance, 15,000
Poison over 20 secondsSantras's Secret: 5% chance, 300 every 2sOrissan's Blood: 5% chance, 450 every 2sZikel's Arrogance: 5% chance, 600 every 2s
StunAulak's Roar: 3% chance, 1sFasimedes's Dignity: 3% chance, 2sMeslamtaeda's Greed: 3% chance, 3s

The other effects follow the same pattern: Water, Earth and Wind damage, single-target or against up to 4 targets, Bleed, Blind, Root, Paralyze, Seal, and slows to Move Speed or Combat Speed.

Which one to use for PvE

Creators do not spend on Theostones for PvE. A few thousand damage on a rare proc is small next to a full rotation.

Creator tip

Now, for PvE, those are completely useless because the damage is so low, it is really not relevant.

CreatorPvE verdict
GrobsUseless, because the damage is so low
MadsinLast of every system. Poison stones performed best early, but all are mostly irrelevant in the long run
KanonUnder 1% of total damage

So for PvE, pick a damage stone you already have or can buy cheaply, engrave it, and spend your Kina elsewhere. Grobs's advice is to pick whatever looks good to you.

Which one to use for PvP

The control stones are why Theostones exist. Grobs points to a 2% chance to Paralyze for 2 seconds as the kind of effect that changes a fight against players. At Unique grade, Ereshkigal's Honor paralyzes for 4 seconds, Nezekan's March roots for 5 and Beritra's Conspiracy seals for 5.

Getting and combining them

Unbound Rare stones can be traded, while the Epic and Unique stones cannot. Combining turns spare stones into higher ones, and the game shows the result chances before you combine:
