How to Fish: Whale Fin, volcano and the final boat

Quick steps

1. 1 Catch and defeat the Bowhead Whale

   Use the Fish Bucket from the Scientist's bait request to fish for the Bowhead Whale. Finish any other active boss encounter first.

2. 2 Put the dead whale into the volcano

   Take its body to the volcano encounter trigger. Release it into the trigger while no boss is active. The eruption brings out the Mutated Bowhead Whale.

3. 3 Defeat the mutated whale and take its Fin

   Kill the mutated whale, then pick up the dropped Whale Fin.

4. 4 Return the Fin and claim the keys

   Bring it to the Whale Scientist for his Quest: whale-encounter request. Take the keys he offers.

5. 5 Use the expedition boat

   Go to the expedition boat. Finish any active boss encounter and put down anything you are carrying before interacting to head home.

Why didn't the first whale drop a Fin?

The Bowhead Whale is the body you need for the volcano. The Whale Fin drops from the Mutated Bowhead Whale after the eruption encounter. Keep the first whale's body and use it to start that fight.

Why isn't the volcano reacting?

The trigger takes the normal Bowhead Whale. It must be dead, released from your hands and inside the volcano trigger. An active boss also prevents the transformation.

Use the marked volcano trigger to locate the encounter. A living whale or another creature does not satisfy it. Once it accepts the body, the eruption leads into the mutated whale fight.

The mutated whale is dead. Why can't you leave?

Pick up its Whale Fin and return it to the Scientist. His request accepts the Fin, and a player must have held it. Defeating the whale alone does not complete the reward exchange.

Take the keys when he offers them. Then use the expedition boat. The final interaction is unavailable while a boss is active or while you are holding an item, so clear both conditions before trying again.
