Aion 2 hidden cubes: keys, locations and using the cube map

NCSOFT / AION 2 official Steam screenshots

TL;DR

  • Hidden cubes are chests hidden in the open world. You need a Key: Hidden Cube to open one.
  • Keys come from Duty Missions and Duty Scrolls, Monolith levels, achievements, attendance rewards and passes. Grobs and Madsin both say to take keys whenever a duty offers them.
  • In the data, cubes spawn in groups. Each group has a set number of cubes that appear at random among many possible spots, on the ground or in water.
  • The Corpus hidden cube map shows every possible spot in Verteron and Altgard. Mark where you heard a cube and it narrows the list to spots within about 130 m.
  • Opening cubes counts toward the Who Brought the Chest? achievements, which pay a key back at every step.

What hidden cubes are

Hidden cubes sit around the open world and need a key to open. The key's own description adds a twist: "Boosting the Cube's energy will yield more valuable rewards."

Creator tip

Then we have these hidden cube keys. They just allow you to open hidden cubes in your open world. They will be very important, so as soon as you see them, always try to get them.

Our data does not list what a cube contains. Madsin ties them to pet progression: he expects the keys from the Monoliths of two characters to give enough rainbow crystals to raise all your Genus Insight to level 10.

Where keys come from

The data lists these key sources:

SourceWhat the data shows
Duty Missions and Duty ScrollsA possible reward on many of them, such as the Wanted bounties
MonolithsThe Verteron and Altgard Monoliths give 12 keys across their levels, the Eltnen and Morheim Monoliths 15
AchievementsExploration and gathering achievements, the Stories of the People series and the hidden cube achievements below
Attendance and passesSeveral attendance calendars and Dawn Legion pass milestones
ShopsThe Season Shop and two vendors, Subbi and the Fresh Lime Trader
AION 2 Season 1 Starter10 keys in the box

Duty rewards are a choice you can steer. Anders explains that duty rewards are shown in a row and the chance drops from left to right, so you reroll for Kina until the reward you want sits in the first or second slot. Madsin names cube keys as one of the two rewards he aims for.

Creator tip

You will want to prioritize getting petals as well as cube keys if you can.

How cubes spawn

The game data places cubes in groups. Each group has a fixed number of cubes and many more possible spots, and the cubes appear at random among those spots. A cube you found once will not always be in the same place.

MapSpawn groupsPossible spots
Verteron951,440
Altgard591,371

Some groups are on the ground and some are underwater. The data marks every cube in both maps as needing a key.

Using the Corpus cube map

The hidden cube map shows every possible spot from the data.

  1. Pick Verteron or Altgard.
  2. Filter by ground or water, or search for a nearby place name.
  3. Choose a search group to see its numbered possible spots and how many cubes it holds.
  4. If you can hear a cube but not see it, use Mark where you heard it and click your rough position. The map then keeps only spots within the cube's estimated sound range, about 130 m.
  5. Share the page URL to send someone the same view.

The sound range is an estimate from the game files. Walls, height and your audio settings change what you hear, and the map cannot tell you which spots hold a cube right now.

Achievements

Opening cubes counts toward the Who Brought the Chest? achievements. Each faction has its own set.
