How to Fish Old Pike guide: lure and boss fight

The Old Pike comes from the $40 Beginner Boss Lure, first sold on Island 2. The pool is 50% The Old Pike and 50% Sunfish. Ordinary Pike is a different creature and will not fill this miniboss's journal entry.

Why Sunfish keeps appearing

The game makes another weighted selection each time the boss lure is used. It does not alternate its two catches or force an unrecorded entry after you have killed one of them. Three Sunfish in a row do not make The Old Pike guaranteed next.

Keep the Sunfish entry if you still need it, finish the active encounter, then use another boss lure. The ordinary Beginner Lure includes Sunfish as a rare catch but has no The Old Pike entry. It is not a cheaper substitute for this particular hunt.

Keep clear of the contact attacks

The Old Pike uses the attacking-fish controller. It moves toward a living target, can steer while airborne and periodically chooses a nearby player. Its collision-damage check continues independently of the visible movement impulse.

Prepare a ranged weapon before casting, keep space around yourself and move when the fish closes in. A leap ending does not create a verified safe window for standing inside its body. The one-second contact-damage cooldown is not a guaranteed attack rhythm.

The Pistol and Shotgun are available on Island 2. Use a weapon you can aim reliably rather than waiting for equipment sold several islands later. These recommendations follow the source behavior; no specific loadout has been timed here.

What the kill completes

Killing The Old Pike records its normal and Drip journal entries. You do not need to find a shiny version for Fishipedia.

Its body can satisfy Competitive eating because it is a miniboss. Finish any intended hand-in or other use before eating or selling it. A fast kill does not award Easy, which checks main bosses only.

The Old Pike is optional for the main island route. To leave Island 2, follow the Giant Piranha Skeleton walkthrough. Killing this miniboss does not replace that trophy hand-in.
