How to Fish Sunfish guide: lure, fight and journal

Use the Beginner Boss Lure to catch Sunfish. The lure costs $40 and first appears on Island 2. Each eligible selection is split equally between Sunfish and The Old Pike, so getting the pike is normal.

Sunfish at a glance

The Sunfish record supplies the encounter values. Higher difficulty and extra connected players increase the health you must remove.

Why the ordinary lure is a poor targeted choice

The $3 Beginner Lure can also select Sunfish, but its weight is only one out of 57, about 1.75%. The boss lure raises that to one in two. It still cannot guarantee Sunfish on your next attempt.

Finish any active boss before trying again. A consumed boss lure is not refunded because it selected The Old Pike. Catching and defeating both is useful for journal completion.

Prepare for movement, not a special damage phase

Sunfish uses the ordinary fish movement controller rather than the attacking-fish controller used by The Old Pike. Its source configuration lets it jump on water and move toward land. It has no scripted main-boss phase transition to wait out.

Bring a weapon you can keep on the moving target and start attacking once the encounter begins. The Pistol and Shotgun are both sold on Island 2. Their availability makes them practical preparation options; this guide does not claim a measured pistol rush or a guaranteed kill time.

A three-minute timeout ends the encounter. Have your loadout ready before fishing instead of spending that window shopping or sorting inventory. The boss difficulty guide explains why a group can face more health than the solo table shows.

Can you eat Sunfish for Competitive eating?

Yes. Sunfish is a miniboss, which meets the creature-type check for Competitive eating. Defeat it, pick up the body and hold the eating action until the animation finishes. Cooking is not required for that achievement. Eating consumes the body.

The achievement does not accept a main boss such as Spider Crab. The full checklist distinguishes eating a miniboss from killing a main boss within ten seconds for Easy.

Sunfish also counts for both of its journal entries when killed. There is no separate Drip Sunfish hunt. If you still need the ordinary fish in its cheaper lure's pool, use the catch table to choose your next target.
