How to Fish boss difficulty, timers and solo play
If a boss is stopping your solo run, Easy difficulty reduces creature health by 25% and incoming creature damage by 50%. You can change difficulty from the main menu or during play. Each encounter also has a time limit, so prepare your equipment before summoning it.
Boss health and encounter timers
These are the one-player Default difficulty values. The timer begins when the boss initializes, rather than when you first damage it. If it runs out, the encounter despawns the boss.
| Encounter | Base HP | Timer | Fight guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spider Crab | 750 | 3 minutes | Claws and stun openings |
| Giant Piranha | 2,500 | 5 minutes | Summons and half-health transition |
| Blue Shark | 2,300 | 3 minutes | Lunges and contact damage |
| Pufferfish | 18,000 | 5 minutes | Growth and poison |
| Albatross | 7,800 | 5 minutes | Dives and projectiles |
| Mutated Bowhead Whale | 38,000 | 5 minutes | Chained slams and lava |
Blue Shark is a miniboss. It is included because its encounter has a boss timer, but it is not an additional main-island passage boss.
What changes on Easy or Hard?
The difficulty update defines these adjustments against Default, the normal baseline:
| Difficulty | Creature health | Creature damage |
|---|---|---|
| Easy | 75% | 50% |
| Default | 100% | 100% |
| Hard | 125% | 125% |
These modifiers change creature statistics. They do not remove the need to trigger the encounter correctly or claim a quest reward afterward. For travel that remains locked after a kill, check the island progression guide.
Does a larger group make the boss harder?
Yes. For the bosses above, each extra connected player adds 50% of the difficulty-adjusted base health, except Pufferfish, which adds 30%.
For example, a Default Pufferfish starts at 18,000 HP with one player and 23,400 with two. A Default Giant Piranha starts at 2,500 with one player and 3,750 with two. The calculation counts connected players, not just living players currently attacking.
When the group grows during an encounter, the boss can gain maximum health and be healed by the increase. Players leaving do not reverse that increase. Prepare the group before summoning instead of relying on someone disconnecting to lower the remaining health.
Do not apply the health multiplier to every source of damage. Contact attacks and creature projectiles use different multiplayer calculations.
Why does shooting sometimes do nothing?
Giant Piranha, Pufferfish and the mutated whale have temporary invulnerability during their half-health transitions. Shooting through those intervals does not reduce their HP. Reposition or reload, while still avoiding contact, summons, poison or lava.
That is different from a boss disappearing because its timer expired. Watch both the health bar and the encounter clock when diagnosing a failed attempt.
Prepare for your current island
Use weapons you can actually buy at that point in the route. Island 2 has the Pistol and Shotgun; the SMG becomes available on Island 3, and the Sniper Rifle on Island 4. A later-island weapon recommendation may only be useful for a revisit.
The encounter guides above explain available equipment and practical responses to the verified attack behavior. They do not promise an effortless strategy, a specific winning time or a terrain exploit. Your own explosives can still kill you with friendly fire disabled, as confirmed in patch 1.0.11.
