How to fish in Valheim: bait, bites and stamina

Equip a Fishing Rod and bait your target fish accepts. Cast nearby, reel at the nibble, then bring the fish close enough to land. Eat stamina food before you start. A hooked fish drains stamina even when you pause reeling.

Get the rod and the right bait

Haldor sells a Fishing Rod for 350 Coins and a stack of 20 Fishing Bait for 10 Coins. You do not need a progression unlock to buy them, but you still need to find Haldor in your world.

Ordinary bait works for some fish, not all of them. Open the target in the fish directory and check its accepted bait. The bait's page explains how to get or craft it. With the right bait, you may still need to wait for a bite.

Cast, hook and land the fish

1. Equip the rod and the appropriate bait. Choose a reachable casting spot and replenish stamina.
2. Use the rod's attack input to cast. A shorter cast leaves you less line to retrieve, though the fish may still take time to approach.
3. Watch for a nibble, then use the block input to reel during that brief window to hook the fish.
4. Continue bringing the fish toward you while watching stamina and its escape behavior. The fish lands when you reel it close enough; leave inventory space for the catch and any bonus items.

Hooking consumes the bait. A fish that escapes after that is not a free retry. A stranded fish can also be picked up when it is out of the water; that is a different interaction from landing a hooked catch.

Why the fish escapes

A hooked fish can drain stamina even while you are not actively reeling. Reeling adds its own cost, while the fish's quality, stamina parameters, escape state and your Fishing skill change the calculation. During an escape the reel also brings it in more slowly. When you run out of stamina with a fish hooked, the catch is lost.

Pausing saves the extra reeling cost, but the hooked fish keeps draining stamina. Start well fed and avoid long casts that leave you too much line to retrieve. The food planner compares available food; the fishing mechanics explains the drain and hook conditions.

Excess distance and line tension can also break the attempt. Watch the line as well as your stamina. Fish movement and your timing can still cost you the catch.
