Valheim building guide: support, roofs and smoke
A collapsing beam needs support. An exposed bed needs shelter. A fire that keeps going out may need somewhere for its smoke to escape. Fix the symptom first, before rebuilding the whole room.

Fix a piece that will not stay up
Follow the connections from the failing piece back to a strong support. Shorten an unsupported span or add an effective supporting connection. Then check the result in the game before extending the structure further.
Support depends on the material class, distances, contact geometry and neighbouring pieces that actually provide support. Structure health is a different value. The building directory lists each piece's material, health and support properties. The structural support reference explains how materials affect support.
The normal highlight runs from red at low support toward green, with a separate colour for maximum support. Deep North also has a flashing blue snow-support warning, so blue does not always mean a piece is grounded.
There is no single maximum height that fits every build. Materials and the way pieces touch determine how far you can extend a structure.
Make the workbench and bed usable
| Message or symptom | Check next |
|---|---|
| Workbench needs a roof | Cover the Workbench with an actual roof and check its usable state |
| Bed needs a roof | Cover the bed's spawn point |
| Bed is too exposed | Add surrounding shelter; the exposure check requires at least 80% cover as measured by the game |
| Bed needs a fire | Put the bed within an active heat area |
| More furniture gives no extra Rested time | Compare comfort groups in the comfort planner |
Filling 80% of the wall spaces does not necessarily give 80% cover. The game measures exposure around the bed's spawn point. If it shows a different message, address that condition next.
Give smoke a clear escape route
Leave clearance above the fire and an open route for smoke to leave the occupied room. A raised cover with side openings is a practical starting point, then test it with the fire burning and the room occupied.
Fireplaces check terrain obstruction, nearby overhead obstruction and a blocked smoke spawner. Weather and strong wind can also affect exposed fires. If a fuelled fire repeatedly stops, inspect those conditions before adding more fuel.
The environmental hazards reference covers exposure; weather and building decay covers weather damage. Smoke collides with building pieces. Test your chimney with the fire lit, especially after changing the roof.
Plan the useful rooms first
A small base can start with a sheltered workbench, storage, a sleeping area and a ventilated cooking space. Add production stations as you unlock their inputs. Leave room to walk between them before adding decorations.
Use the crafting planner for construction materials and the station directory for operating requirements. Try one of these layouts, then check support, smoke and access to each station in the game.
Base layouts to adapt
| Layout | Arrangement | Useful tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Small starter hall | Entrance and storage at one end; workbench along a sheltered side; sleeping area at the other end; a ventilated cooking position accessible from the room | Short trips between essentials; leave expansion space before enclosing the whole perimeter |
| Workshop courtyard | Crafting and storage under roofs around an open working area; separate the sleeping room from production traffic | Easy to add stations without rebuilding the main hall; check each station's own operating conditions |
| Portal outpost | A clear portal arrival area beside labeled storage and a compact rest shelter | Convenient resupply; avoid filling the arrival and walking routes with decorations |
For a simple room plan, arrange the functional areas like this, then choose piece counts to fit the stations you have unlocked:
| Far end | Centre | Entrance end |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeping and comfort | Clear walkway | Door and arrival space |
| Sheltered workbench | Storage access | Supplies and repair stop |
| Cooking with smoke exit | Clear walkway | Space for later expansion |
A castle, stone tower or larger longhouse can repeat these functions with more separation. Check support as you add height. For roofs, choose a consistent slope and matching corner/ridge pieces from the building catalog, start with the supported perimeter, and test a short section before extending the span. Check the materials and support properties of each roof family. A different appearance need not mean stronger support.
Choose a base location around your current trips, terrain and access to needed resources. There is no single best coordinate for every generated world. Use the raid-condition explorer when considering progression-dependent threats; some events can still threaten a walled base.
How to move furniture
To move furniture, use the Hammer's remove-piece action, then rebuild it in the new position. Selecting or copying a piece only prepares another placement. Check permissions, the required station and whether the piece allows removal. Some special pieces or removal methods may not return every ingredient.
Display a Dragon Egg
A Dragon Egg can be attached to a normal Item Stand or its horizontal variant. Use the egg on an empty stand where you have access, following the game's displayed item-use control.
The egg weighs 200 and has a default portal restriction, so plan how to get it home. Moder's summoning altar uses three separate offering stands. If an item stand behaves incorrectly after updating, follow the current backup and recovery guidance before experimenting with valuable displayed items.
