Valheim equipment guide: choose weapons, armor and arrows
The best weapon for you depends on the enemy, your skill and the quality you can craft. A weapon's combined damage number can conceal resisted damage types or woodcutting damage. A stronger shield can still fail if your stamina or stagger limit is too low.
The examples below use the current Valheim 1.0.12 equipment and creature values, checked September 13, 2026. Boss resistance examples contain progression spoilers.
Compare weapons, armor and shields
Open the equipment comparison and select your current item and its possible replacement. Set the quality you can craft for each. Compare damage types, durability, movement, blocking and upgrade costs. Then use the combat calculator for the target's defenses and your skill assumptions.
For armor, compare the protection gained with the movement and equipment effects you give up. For a shield, compare ordinary blocking and timed parrying separately. A successful parry depends on a valid incoming attack and timing as well as the displayed numbers. Food changes the resources available to survive the attempt; compare that preparation in the food planner.
Use those numbers to narrow your choice. Attack speed, missed swings and enemy movement still affect how a weapon performs in a fight.
Huntsman Bow or Finewood Bow?
| Bow | Quality 1 pierce | Pierce per quality step | Base draw stamina per second |
|---|---|---|---|
| Finewood Bow | 32 | 3 | 6 |
| Huntsman Bow | 42 | 3 | 8 |
An upgraded Finewood Bow is worth keeping if you need Iron for other crafts. At quality 4 its base pierce is 41, compared with 42 for a quality 1 Huntsman Bow. The Huntsman makes less noise when firing and hitting, though nearby enemies can still notice a shot.
These are weapon contributions before ammunition, draw state and skill modifiers. Compare the recipes and your current quality before assuming that a new bow is a large damage upgrade.
Arrows for Bonemass and Yagluth
Frost Arrows are a practical choice for either boss when you have their ingredients. They contribute 26 pierce and 52 frost. Needle Arrows contribute 62 pierce; a higher pure-pierce value does not overcome a target's pierce resistance.
| Target | Pierce | Frost | Fire | Consequence for these arrow choices |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bonemass | Very resistant | Weak | Very resistant | Frost exploits his weakness. Pierce and fire deal heavily reduced damage. |
| Yagluth | Very resistant | Normal | Resistant | Frost deals normal damage. Pierce deals heavily reduced damage. |
Both are immune to poison. Frost Arrows suit these resistances, though archery may not be your fastest way to win. Your bow, skill, ammunition supply and ability to land shots still matter.
Pick an axe for woodcutting
For woodcutting, check chop damage and tool tier. Adding combat damage to the total will overstate how well an axe cuts trees.
| Axe | Quality 1 chop | Tool tier | Base primary-attack stamina |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze Axe | 40 | 2 | 8 |
| Iron Axe | 50 | 3 | 10 |
| Black Metal Axe | 60 | 4 | 14 |
Use an available axe that can damage your target tree, then weigh more chop damage against stamina and crafting cost. The Black Metal Axe hits harder than the other two at quality 1, but each swing costs more stamina. Skills, upgrades, hit placement, tree resistance and falling-log physics affect the work.
Armor names do not always match the metal
There is no Black Metal armor set in Valheim 1.0.12. You can make Black Metal weapons and shields, but the Padded Cuirass uses Iron and Linen Thread.
Use the armor directory for the current pieces and their recipes. Wolf Hide Chestpiece and Wolf Hide Trousers are the displayed names commonly sought as wolf or silver armor; Padded, Fenris, Carapace and Flametal pieces have their own names and effects. Equipment you can sustain with your current station and resources can be a better choice than a more expensive item you cannot yet repair or upgrade.
For upgrades, select the normal or Forge of Potential option in the comparison tool. Each has its own ingredients, quality caps and possible outcomes. Check the initial recipe separately so you do not gather special upgrade materials before you need them.
