Valheim mods, BepInEx and VR compatibility
Valheim has no official mod support, and game updates can break loaders, plugins or modded saves. Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ also confirms that 1.0 has no console mod support or Steam Workshop integration.
For building, graphics, portals, texture packs or gameplay changes, check the individual project's supported game version, dependencies and release notes. A mod manager can install the packages, but you still need to check whether they work with your game version.
Install or check BepInEx
Use the Valheim-specific BepInExPack maintainer instructions. The pack includes configuration and startup scripts for Valheim. Follow its instructions when installing this pack.
For a managed installation, follow the package's installation link and launch through the selected mod manager. For a manual installation, extract the download separately, then place the contents of its BepInExPack_Valheim folder in the game directory. Follow the package's separate operating-system instructions and check its startup messages before adding more plugins.
On Apple Silicon Macs, the maintainer's instructions use an Intel/Rosetta launch because this BepInEx stack does not run natively on ARM64. This was checked September 13, 2026. Check the loader's startup messages even if the game opens. Use the exact current command in the macOS instructions.
Does a multiplayer mod belong on the server or every client?
That depends on the mod. Read its installation and version requirements. A visual plugin may have different requirements from a mod that changes server rules or adds items. Do not assume that installing a plugin on a dedicated server distributes it to guests. For ValheimPlus specifically, the maintained project provides separate installation, compatibility and troubleshooting documents; use the instructions for your selected release.
Record the game version, loader version and plugin versions on both sides when diagnosing a mismatch. For Linux servers, the BepInExPack maintainer provides a dedicated startup script; use it to launch the modded server. Provider panels and container images can also manage plugins through their own directories, so check their documented mapping before copying files.
Valheim in VR
VHVR is a community PC mod that uses SteamVR/OpenVR and requires BepInExPack plus a compatible headset. It is not a native console VR mode. Its maintainers published v0.10.0 on September 11, 2026 as an initial Deep North build and requested testing. Treat that release as an early build and check known issues before installing other mods alongside it. See the project requirements and release notes.
A modded game fails after updating
Back up the world, character and configuration first. Keep the failing installation's log and version list. Test an unmodified installation with a disposable world. If it works, the loader or a plugin is the likely place to investigate. Keep valuable mod-dependent saves out of the test.
If the unmodified test works, check dependency updates and reintroduce compatible plugins in small groups. Report the smallest reproducible failure to the relevant maintainer. Removing a plugin may leave its changes in the save.
For an unmodified game that also fails, follow installation troubleshooting. For a connection that fails without mods, use the multiplayer guide.
