Valheim comfort guide: Rested time and the maximum
To raise comfort, add furniture from different comfort groups. Another chair beside your throne will not help. Start with shelter, keep furniture less than 10 metres from where you rest, and make sure pieces that need to be active are running.
Maximum comfort from the buildable furniture listed for Valheim 1.0.12 is 24, giving 31 minutes of Rested. Without the seasonal Maypole and Yule Tree, the maximum is 22 comfort and 29 minutes. These totals were checked September 13, 2026. You need access to all the listed pieces and must place them where they count. Legacy pieces available only through commands are excluded.
Build a plan by group
This setup reaches 22 comfort without seasonal furniture. You can swap a piece for another with the same comfort value in its group.
| Contribution | Example | Comfort |
|---|---|---|
| Sheltered base | A valid sheltered resting position | 2 |
| Fire | Hearth | 2 |
| Bed | Dragon Bed | 2 |
| Banner | Red Jute Curtain | 2 |
| Chair | Raven Throne | 3 |
| Table | Long Heavy Table | 2 |
| Carpet | Wolf Rug | 2 |
| Stand | Armour Stand | 1 |
| Decor | Asksvin Skeleton | 1 |
| Garland | Fey Lights | 1 |
| Lantern | Lava Lantern | 2 |
| Other | Hot Tub | 2 |
| Total | Before the two seasonal additions | 22 |
Use the comfort planner to replace these with pieces you can build. Its result shows which selected pieces contribute, which do not count and which need to be active. Follow a piece's link for its materials and availability.
A Maypole and a Yule Tree each add one more comfort outside the ordinary grouped choices. The season controls when you can build them; an existing piece can still add comfort. Other seasonal decorations may share a group with furniture you already have. Another garland or lantern will only help if it raises that group's bonus.
Why another rug or chair adds nothing
The game takes the highest active comfort contribution in each named group and skips the others. It also skips a piece whose internal name matches the previous piece in the sorted list. Different-looking furniture can still compete for the same bonus.
For example, adding a lower-value seat beside a qualifying throne does not add another seat bonus. A second fire in the same group does not stack with a better fire's contribution. The planner shows which pieces it skips. Check that list if a fire or another piece is inactive.
Without shelter, the calculation stays at comfort 1 and does not add nearby furniture. A camp with many decorative pieces can therefore still need a usable resting shelter.
Convert comfort into Rested time
The current duration is 8 minutes + 1 minute for each comfort level above 1. Comfort 6 gives 13 minutes; comfort 22 gives 29 minutes; comfort 24 gives 31 minutes. Moving somewhere less comfortable does not immediately shorten the Rested time you have left. Resting refreshes the effect only when the new duration is longer than the remaining time.
More comfort makes Rested last longer. It does not make the regeneration or skill-gain bonuses stronger. See the mechanics reference for those bonuses.
If the game shows less comfort than your plan, check shelter, furniture distance, active pieces and shared groups. The planner cannot check your room's geometry, heat or smoke. Stand where you intend to rest and confirm the result in the game.
