Valheim farming guide: crops, Jotun Puffs and growth problems
To start farming, get a Cultivator and check what your chosen crop needs for planting, including its biome. Cultivate the ground where required, leave growing space and check the plant's status after placing it. Seeds, harvested vegetables and mushrooms do not all use the same planting cycle.
The conditions below were checked against Valheim 1.0.12 on September 13, 2026.
Plant for a repeatable harvest
- Choose the crop in the farming directory. Check its accepted biome, planting cost, cultivation requirement and grown output.
- Equip the Cultivator, prepare suitable ground and select that crop's planting option. Keep some planting stock in reserve instead of consuming the whole harvest.
- Leave clearance around the plant and avoid covering it with a roof. Read its status after planting and check again as it grows.
- Harvest the grown result when it is ready. Follow the crop's own seed-production or replanting path for the next cycle.
Use the crafting planner for inputs you still need. Check the crop's biome before bringing planting stock home.
Grow Jotun Puffs
Plant Jotun Puffs on cultivated ground in the Mistlands. Each planting uses one Jotun Puff. You plant the mushroom itself, so you do not need mushroom seeds.
Jotun Puffs have a growth threshold of 4,000 to 5,000 seconds on the world's clock. A healthy plant matures when the game next checks it after that threshold, so a real-time timer will not predict the exact harvest moment. Leave space and keep the site in the correct biome. A plant that cannot grow may be destroyed when its growth attempt runs, so do not leave a known unhealthy crop expecting it to recover automatically.
The plant and item page list base yields, possible extra drops and skill or world modifiers. One mushroom planted does not necessarily mean one mushroom harvested.
Read the actual growth problem
| Status | What to change |
|---|---|
| Wrong biome | Move the planting to a biome that this crop permits |
| Not cultivated | Cultivate the ground for a plant that requires it |
| No sun | Remove the obstruction detected above the plant |
| No space | Give it room away from obstructing plants or geometry |
| Too hot or too cold | Check the plant's climate tolerance and applicable shield protection |
| Missing attachment | Supply the support required by a plant that grows attached to a surface |
Heat or cold protection will not fix a wrong-biome warning. The game checks the biome first. Spacing also depends on the crop, nearby plants and obstructions, so test the layout on your terrain before copying a fixed spacing rule.
These checks also explain why adding more plants can reduce a farm's useful output. Test a short row with the actual crop and terrain before repeating the layout across a large field.
