Returning to Valheim 1.0: keep your world or start again?
You can keep your existing Valheim world in 1.0. Iron Gate recommends a fresh start for the fullest experience, but you do not have to abandon your base. New biome content needs unexplored areas, which may mean travelling farther in an old world.
Gameplay details checked against Valheim 1.0.12 on September 13, 2026.
Before opening an old world
Back up your world and character using the save recovery guide. Keep that backup separate from the active save. Update the clients and server, and check mod compatibility before loading a valued world.
A fresh start lets you discover changes while progressing through the game. Keeping your world lets you continue from your existing base and progress. Choose the one you want to spend time on. If you keep the old world, look for new content in unexplored areas.

The official FAQ says achievement statistics start tracking with 1.0. An old boss kill therefore does not necessarily satisfy a newly tracked achievement. The September hotfix added an explicit opt-in command for achievements, changing the cheat-lock rule described in the July FAQ. Read the current achievement reference for the conditions.
Patch status checked September 13, 2026
The latest official hotfix page reviewed here lists Steam 1.0.12. It says Xbox 1.0.11 corresponds to the other-platform 1.0.10 patch, so those different version numbers can still be compatible.
That page also reports a Switch 2 crossplay interruption while its patch is unavailable. Check the current official hotfix notice before arranging a mixed-platform session.
If you have used item or armour stands since updating, keep backups before removing valuable items. The hotfix describes a partial correction for lost quality or durability and asks players to retain backups in affected cases.
Iron Gate has committed to further bug fixes and quality-of-life work, but the FAQ does not promise a specific future content roadmap. Use current item and mechanics pages when older Hearth & Home or Early Access guides disagree with the game.
Reading older guides and roadmaps
Steam's release history separates the February 2, 2021 Early Access launch from the September 9, 2026 full release. Hearth & Home was the earlier September 2021 update; its publisher trailer announced September 16. That update is already part of the game.
A search result labeled 2022 or 2023 can still explain a useful idea, but check its item costs, food, unlock and combat advice against the current references above. Old roadmap dates are historical plans. Plan around the biome you want to explore next. Check the gear and materials you need now before following an older guide's crafting list.
